Our Mission

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word rookie as "novice". Kids are rookies by nature because of their curiousity and thirst for knowledge. At Rookie Labs, our mission is simple: "Help Kids Get Smarter Everyday". Our educational apps loaded on a mobile device like the Apple iPhone makes our mission possible.

It all started in 2008, when we noticed we were always giving our iPhones to our kids to entertain them for a bit. Back then, they played with silly games and apps we downloaded. As more and more iPhones came to market, we noticed other parents doing the same, in restaurants, at the airport, anywhere really. We asked ourselves, "why aren't our kids playing with apps where they actually learn something?" At that moment, we knew we needed to create apps that would be both fun and educational.

Our product development process starts with brainstorming hundreds of ideas around a particular educational concept; only a handful, make it past ideation to an actual app. After we settle on an idea, we nurture it by designing the interface, creating our own illustrations, and hand-crafting the code. Along the way, we work with teachers and educators to ensure our apps have educational value and we rigorously test them with kids.

We are a company dedicated to learning and childhood education. Unlike other vendors of apps for the iPhone, we aren't trying to develop the next iPhone fad, or put out a hundred apps with no cohesive plan. At Rookie Labs, we have a clear mission that, in earnest, allows us to focus and build the best educational apps for kids. We love what we do. We design our apps as if our own kids were playing them. We want to see your child succeed, improve on skills, and most importantly, have fun. Next time, you're in the App Store, please look for our apps in the education aisle.

The Team

CO-FOUNDER
Jay Larlarb

Jay completed undergraduate and graduate studies at Stanford University, focusing on smart product design. After working for "the man" at Intel and a bunch of startups, he realized he wanted to be "the man". Jay lives for rapid prototyping and development of fun, new ideas and building all things tech, especially software. As a father, he regularly volunteers at his kids' schools, attending playground duty and teaching science and math related topics. He enjoys every moment he spends with his children, knowing that kids are truly (in the words of Guy Kawasaki) "the ultimate start-up."

CO-FOUNDER
Roger Corbin

Roger majored in marketing at Cal State Northridge. Unlike his partner, he worked for "the woman" in a family owned business selling and marketing frozen H2O to the masses. Roger was instrumental in developing new innovative products for the ice category; for instance, pioneering Arrowhead Premium and Shivers Flavored Ice. Having spent years marketing these products through the largest grocery chains in California, Roger has gained an intimate understanding of consumer behavior. Roger is moving from low tech to high tech in an effort to help "grow" the minds of children. If Roger can sell Ice to Eskimos...he definitely will find a way to help kids get smarter!
